Jajanan Pasar (Traditional Market Snack)

For my first post post, I want to review seven types of traditional market snacks. Because my house is close to the market, so I immediately bought it at the market. These snacks are not only sold in the market, but you can find them on the roadside or street vendors who always pass in front of the house in the morning. If you want to know where I bought it, the location is at Pasar Sekip Ujung Palembang on Amphibi Street. To arrive at the stand, after you arrive in front of the main front gate of the market, you only need to turn left and you can immediately see a full line of stand vendors and the choice of snacks is quite complete here. For the price, it is still affordable, starting from Rp. 1,000 - Rp. 3000. You have to note the time so you don't run out, because they are only open from 6 am to 9 am and you can not buying by food delivery like gofood or grabfood.

RISOLES

As you can see, the first picture is Risoles. This snack is always my favorite whenever I go to the market. According to wikipedia, risoles are pastries filled with meat, usually minced meat, and vegetables wrapped in an omelette, and fried after being coated with breadcrumbs and beaten egg, small patty enclosed in pastry, or rolled in breadcrumbs, usually baked or deep fried. The origin of Risoles was formerly called roinsolles, became known in the 13th century. At that time, this food was just a pancake fried in a frying pan using butter or beef fat/lard. In the modern era, this food filled with minced meat. Risoles filling can be chicken, beef, and various vegetables. Usually, the type of filling for rissoles that is often found is vegetable filling because the price is cheaper than chicken filling.

The kind of risoles that I bought are vegetable fillings. The unit price is only Rp. 1,000. As for the taste, it's pretty good. The vegetable filling is just enough, nothing less. The size of the risoles can be said suitable for the price Rp1.000. The texture of the risoles skin is soft, and when you bite the skin it looks like it has been rolled up many times, but because the skin is not too thick, the ratio between the skin and the filling is suitable, even the skin at the end of the risoles feels crispy.

LEMPER

The second is Lemper. Lemper is an Indonesian snack made from glutinous rice filled with seasoned shredded chicken, fish abon or serundeng (shredded sweet coconut). This snack is generally found on the island of Java and at first the lemper filling did not use chicken or shredded meat, but grated coconut that had been seasoned. The process of making lemper starts with the glutinous rice is soaked and cooked with coconut milk and salt. The filling is made of shredded chicken, chicken stock, garlic, candle nut, ground coriander, cumin, brown sugar, vegetable oil, minced shallot, coconut milk, kaffir lime leaves, salt and pepper. When the cooked glutinous rice is cool enough to handle, the chicken filling is placed on the glutinous rice and rolled in a banana leaf, wrapped and secured with biting or lidi semat, a small wooden "needle" made of coconut leaf mid rib or bamboo. Then these banana leaf packages are steamed or grilled. This snack is famous throughout Indonesia as a booster before entering the big meal stage. Lemper is often used as a favorite menu in snack boxes among other traditional snacks, just like risoles.

The price of this lemper is Rp. 1,000. The size of this lemper is relatively small and when eaten, it is a shame that there is the least of chicken filling in a lot of sticky rice. The taste is actually pretty good, from the taste of the sweet and savory chicken filling, as well as the sticky rice, there is a savory taste that comes from the coconut milk.

PEMPEK KULIT

Next picture is Pempek Kulit. However, the picture above is one of a variant from pempek. Pempek is a traditional food from the Palembang city. Pempek kulit is made from a mixture of fish skin, meat fish and tapioca flour. This kind of pempek is immediately cooked by frying until crisp and combined with Cuko (sweet and sour spicy vinegar sauce). The result, the appearance of this pempek is getting darker and the smell of fish is also quite strong.

The price is also the same, Rp. 1,000. As for the taste, the fish taste is not felt and the texture is a bit chewy. It also tastes a little bland.

PEMPEK BELAH

Then, next is pempek with a different type than before, namely Pempek Belah. Generally pempek is a food made from fish meat and starch. However, this pempek is made without using fish, which only uses tapioca flour which is called pempek dos. This pempek belah is similar to small pempek lenjer which is fried, then split and filled with soy sauce and dry shrimp mixture.

The price is also the same, Rp. 1,000. The dough is soft. It tastes pretty good because the sweet and savory taste is just enough even though the sauce is not much.

KETAN KELAPA

The next is Ketan Kelapa (sticky rice with coconut). Ketan Kelapa is a combination of sticky rice and grated coconut which is sweet because it is mixed with brown sugar. The method of making this snack is only mold sticky rice that has been steamed and then sprinkled with grated coconut mixed with brown sugar on top.

The price is Rp 1,000. For the texture, it is chewy and soft and a sprinkling of coconut it tastes good

OTAK-OTAK

This is Otak-Otak. Actually, it is almost the same as pempek, but the difference is that it is only wrapped in banana leaves. Based on wikipedia, Otak-otak is a food made from minced mackerel meat wrapped in banana leaves, grilled, and served with spicy sour sauce. This food is popular in the areas of South Sumatra and Tanjung Pinang as well as the Melaka Strait and Karimata Strait, such as the Riau Islands, Singapore, and Malaysia. In Palembang, people eat otak-otak with cuko (sweet and sour spicy vinegar sauce), while across the strait on Bangka Belitung islands, the slightly different sour cuko sauce is made with a mixture of vinegar, shrimp paste and fermented soybean paste. In Jakarta and Makassar, it is enjoyed with spicy peanut sauce.

The price of these snack is Rp. 1,000. When you look at the shape, this otak-otak is larger than common size that is usually sold. But when I tried it, this is not what I expected. The taste of the fish is almost non-existent and the coconut milk can only taste a little, the texture becomes chewy because it uses a lot of tapioca flour.

DADAR GULUNG

Then, the last is the Dadar Gulung (Roll Pancake). Dadar gulung is a popular traditional snack of sweet coconut pancake. It is often described as an Indonesian coconut pancake. Dadar gulung is one of the popular snacks in Indonesia, especially in Java. In Indonesian, dadar literally means "omelette" or "pancake" while gulung means "to roll". The pancake usually has a green color, which is acquired from suji leaves or pandan leaves. It is a green-coloured folded omelette or pancake made of rice flour, filled with grated coconut and palm sugar. It is commonly found in Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. The method of making this cake is that the green dough is poured into a flat frying pan. Then, it is filled with sweet coconut then folded on each side and rolled like a kebab.

The price is Rp 1,000. It tastes good like common pancakes. The sweet taste of the coconut and brown sugar filling is also just enough, not too sweet which makes you feel nauseous. The thickness of the dough is suitable.
